The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
