"When are you interviewing the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: I also desires to be the Haims' newest recruit. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Several famous fans have also petitioned for the honor.

One thing is obvious a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their videos repeatedly show them striding in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the ultimate honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage young girls to form a group."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the fourth Haim sister."

Historic Nod

The band are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," says Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record emerged from a time of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words track breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That developed confidence required a new sound – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their place in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an global following.

Yet the sister act will forever be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was four," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still making music."
